Winner of the 2009 Judy Black Early Research Award

The Judy K. Black Early Career Research Award commemorates the life and honors the memory of the wife of one of The Academy’s founders and past presidents, Dr. David R. “Randy” Black. Judy died tragically in a traffic accident on January 31, 2003.  This award of the American Academy of Health Behavior recognizes early-career health behavior research that is innovative and rigorous and that makes an important contribution to science or practice.   Chair of the Judy Black Award Committee: Dr. Robert McDermott


2009 Award Winner, Meenakshi Fernandes

This year's winner was Ms. Meena Fernandes, MPhil, for her paper "The Role of School Physical Activity Programs in Child Obesity Trajectory", which is co-authored with Roland Sturm.  The paper has been accepted by the Journal of Physical Activity and Health (in press).

Ms. Fernandes is a 4th year Doctoral Fellow at the Pardee RAND Graduate School located in Santa Monica, CA. Her interests are broadly related to the economic and social determinants of population health. At RAND her work has focused on the impact of school nutrition and physical activity policies on childhood obesity. The paper for which the award was received is part of her dissertation. Before starting her PhD, Meena worked in the health policy division of the Congressional Budget Office and at the World Bank in Washington DC. Meena also has a BA with honors from the University of Chicago.
